It works for those who are hypnotizable. The individual has to allow themself to enter that state, and the relaxation.

An uncle wanted to quit smoking. He had tried all kinds of methods to rid himself of this bad habit like nicotine lozenges, patches, chewing gum and counseling. Some worked for a while, but then he would eventually go back to smoking. Finally, a friend of his suggested hypnosis. My uncle tried this after learning that studies do suggest that some people where able to kick the habit with the help of hypnosis. Under hypnosis, the hypnotherapist planted suggestions that paint cigarettes and smoking in a negative light, like cigarette poisons the body. My uncle went for several sessions and he hasn't touched a cigarette for five years.
